Final Phytoremediation Treatability Study
Preface
The purpose of this report is to document all work conducted in association with the phytoremediation treatability testing activities performed for solid waste management unit (SWMU) B-20 at Camp Stanley Storage Activity (CSSA), Boerne, Texas. The report is organized into six sections:
Section 1 is an introduction that summarizes the objectives of the study;
Section 2 provides a description of the site and a summary of previously performed investigations;
Section 3 describes the methods and protocols used to perform the benchscale treatability study;
Results and data evaluation from the study are detailed in Section 4;
Section 5 presents evaluation criteria for determining conclusions of the remedial technology; and
Section 6 discusses the significant findings and recommendations of the study;
References are included in Section 7.
Appendix A includes a chronology of actions and investigations that have been conducted at SWMU B-20. Appendix B contains the final technical report and work plan provided by Phytotech, Inc. (Phytotech) and modified by EdenSpace Systems Corporation (EdenSpace). Phytotech was subcontracted to perform a laboratory benchscale treatability study under Subcontract No. 730396-03000-00 (Phytotech, Inc., 1998). Appendix C contains a projected cost estimate for remediating soils located at SWMU B-20.
This document was prepared for CSSA by Parsons Engineering Science, Inc. (Parsons ES) of Austin, Texas, under the U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command (AMC) Contract F11623-94-D0024, delivery order RL33. It complies with all appropriate regulatory requirements for closure of solid waste management units as stated in 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), part 265 and 30 Texas Administrative Code (TAC) 335, subchapters A, E, and S. The CSSA U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) identification number is TXD2210020739, and its Texas solid waste registration number is 69026.
This report has been prepared for the United States Army, AMC, and AFCEE by Parsons ES, Phytotech, and EdenSpace for the purpose of the Army Environmental Protection and Enhancement Program. The limited objectives of this report and the ongoing nature of the Army mission, along with the evolving knowledge of site conditions and chemical effects on the environment and health, must be considered when evaluating this report since subsequent facts may become known that make this report premature or inaccurate.
