AOC 36 - Mustard Gas Investigation Report

Section 4.0 - Location Survey

In early 1997, the survey coordinates identified in the certificate signed by the Technical Escort Unit head (U.S. Army Chemical Corps communication, H.J. Young, Jr., 1st Lt., Cml C, 23 May 1958) were used to physically locate the former mustard gas burial site at CSSA. Baker Surveying, a licensed surveyor in San Antonio, Texas, was contracted to use the historical survey coordinates of 829100 yards, 691750 yards, as identified on the Camp Stanley General Map, dated 23 March 1942 to locate the site. Baker Surveying was provided with a copy of the historical map during their surveying activities. However, Baker found that the grid system used on this map is not a standard survey datum. Therefore, on 18 February 1997, Baker placed the center point of the suspected mustard gas area as accurately as possible using other known references, and topographic and cultural features. An area of almost one acre (40,000 square feet) centered on the surveyed center point was marked with stakes for further investigation (Figure 5 in Attachments). No sign of stressed vegetation or any other features which would indicate a mustard gas disposal area was observed in this area.
