Hydrogeologic Report for Evaluation of Groundwater Contamination

Section 1 - Introduction

After dissolved halogenated volatile organics were detected in a facility water supply well, Camp Stanley Storage Actvity (CSSA) requested that Engineering-Science, Inc. (ES) perform a preliminary evaluation of groundwater contamination at CSSA. Work actions and preparation of reports and plans were accomplished under contract F33615-89-D-4003, order 67, for the U.S. Department of the Air Force, Armstrong Laboratory/OEB, and CSSA.

Sampling and analysis of CSSA water supply wells by the Texas Department of Health (TDH) in August 1991 first indicated dissolved volatile organics in one drinking water supply well. That well was immediately taken out of service and the well users notified. Subsequent sampling and analysis of well water by the TDH and the Texas Water Commission (TWC) confirmed the presence of halogenated compounds in the out-of-service well and in an additional inactive well.

ES performed the preliminary evaluation during the fall of 1992 to assess the regional and site hydrogeology pertinent to groundwater contamination and to review CSSA records regarding potential source areas. Results of the preliminary evaluation at CSSA were prepared in four separate plans and reports: a health and safety plan, a sampling and analysis plan, a work plan, and this hydrogeologic report. The data, conclusions, and recommendations generated from this evaluation will be used to design a work plan for a site investigation (SI) of groundwater contamination.

This report discusses the project background, regional and site hydrogeology determined through research of publications and CSSA records, and onsite field efforts including well inventory, survey, and sampling, a geologic survey, and a downhole camera survey. The report summarizes hydrogeologic data gathered during the preliminary evaluation and presents recommendations concerning the status of the existing wells and the SI to be performed at CSSA.

Section 2 of this report discussed the project background. Section 3 presents the regional hydrogeologic setting, and Section 4 describes the site geology and hydrogeology. Section 5 is an account of the preliminary assessment. Finally, Section 6 presents conclusions and recommendations.
