Surface Geophysical Surveys

An initial technique for identifying the extent of SWMUs, particularly those where subsurface disposal of solid waste took place, is to conduct a surface geophysical survey. Geophysical surveys use either an electromagnetic induction (EMI) detector or ground penetrating radar (GPR) to detect subsurface anomalies. Prior to collecting surface geophysical data, a grid system is established at each site listed below that encompasses the areas of suspected ground disturbance. These grids consist of staked locations separated by intervals ranging from 25 to 100 feet, depending on the size of the area and the amount of obstructions, if any.
