Technical Memorandum on Surface Geophysical Surveys, Well 16 Source Characterization

Section 9 - Well 16

9.1 - Site History and Description

Well 16 is located on the northern perimeter of the inner cantonment (Figure 1.1). It is not a SWMU but was added to the geophysical surveys to investigate the immediate area around Well 16. The site is bounded to the north and south by a fence and paved road, respectively. Lying near the Well 16 building is the Well 16 roof, a water tank, and a utility pole. Also located on the site near the road is an overhead water supply, and near the inner cantonment fence is Well D (Figure 9.1).

9.2 - Geophysical Survey Results

Figure 9.2 and Figure 9.3 depict contour maps of apparent ground conductivity and in-phase EM data, respectively, for the east-west EM transects at the Well 16 site. EM readings were taken along transects separated by 10 feet. EM anomalies are observed in the Well 16 area but are associated with cultural features such as the Well 16 building and roof, a water tank, a utility pole, and a 4-inch buried utility line which trends south from the Well 16 building. The EM anomaly at x,y coordinates 44,A on Figure 9.2 is associated with the underground utility line mentioned above. The EM anomaly at x,y coordinates 51,E is associated with the utility pole is shown on Figure 9.1. EM readings were also affected by Well D to the west and the fence line to the north.

A GPR survey was also conducted at Well 16 using the GSSI SIR-3 system. The GPR survey was conducted along transects oriented east-west and separated by 20 feet. The only anomalies detected during the GPR survey were associated with the underground 4-inch utility line mentioned above.
