Final TO42 Site Survey Report

Background/Survey of Potential Well Sites

Background

Parsons Engineering Science, Inc. (Parsons) is under Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) Contract No. F41624-00-D-8024, Task Order 0042 (TO42) to install 17 monitoring wells and upgrade eight existing wells at Camp Stanley Storage Activity (CSSA). CSSA is located about 19 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio, Texas and approximately one mile east of I-10 North on Ralph Fair Road (Hwy. 3351). The CSSA site is a 4,000-acre tract located in northwestern Bexar County 10 miles south of Boerne, Texas.

The well installation and upgrade work is part of an ongoing groundwater quality investigation within a larger scope, encompassing other potential environmental issues. Groundwater of the Lower Glen Rose (LGR), Bexar Shale (BS), and Cow Creek (CC) Formations belonging to the Trinity Aquifer system are the focus of the current project. Parsons intends to install new monitoring wells and well clusters, and to upgrade existing wells.

Survey of Potential Well Sites

Parsons conducted a site survey at CSSA on 14 November 2001 in preparation of the monitoring well installation and upgrading phase of TO42 work. The purpose of the survey was to select drilling locations and identify potential obstacles that might interfere with the planned well installations and upgrades. The original survey was conducted at sites for 24 new wells and seven well upgrades. However, new data quality objectives (DQOs) changed the scope to 17 new wells and eight well upgrades. Therefore, four new work sites were not visited during the site survey visit. However, Parsons has a good working knowledge of the locations and requirements of the added locations.

Well site locations are shown on Figure 1. Some sites are clear and require no action prior to well construction; others will need some degree of modification for work to proceed safely and efficiently. Suggested work prior to drilling or upgrading will consist of vegetation clearing, tree trimming, and verifying locations of underground utilities.

For this survey, 11 new potential well sites and two well rehabilitation sites were inspected. Additionally, Parsons visited existing CSSA Wells CS-9, CS-10, and CS-11 where continuous monitoring of pressure data is being considered. Factors considered during the survey included, but were not limited to, accessibility, equipment usage at the site, utilities, and safety issues. Site survey details of the planned well installations and upgrades follow below. Photographs of well site features are shown in Appendix A.
