Coal Bins

RL17 Work Plan

Soils: Crawford and Bexar stony

Known: Presently out of use, the coal bins were previously used for the storage of coal (ES, 1993b). Neither the bins nor the surrounding area were used for waste disposal. The bins are concrete structures constructed above a lined site to protect the soil and groundwater from contamination. Its integrity remained intact for the duration of its operation.

Previous Investigations: None.

Data Needs: None.

Closure Activities: The history of the coal bins is well documented and gives no indication of the disposal of any type of solid waste. Additionally, the bins have provided secure storage of coal since its construction. The coal bins should not have been included on the original list of solid waste management units and should be delisted as a solid waste management unit. The following evidence will be used to support delisting of the site as a solid waste management unit:

CSSA historical records of activities at the coal bins.

Aerial photos.

Logbook notes of field activities at the site.

Design plans or photographs demonstrating the integrity of the structure to contain coal.
