AOC 36 - Mustard Gas Investigation Report

Section 8.0 - Schonstedt Magnetometer Survey

Throughout the excavation activities, Schonstedt GA-52B Locators were used to verify removal of anomalies, as well as to aid identification activities. The Schonstedt GA-52B is similar to the Foerster Ferex locator in that it is a passive dual fluxgate magnetometer which is used to detect ferrous metal items. However, the Schonstedt locator only has an audio signal, and according to manufacturer specifications, it detects large ferrous items to a maximum depth of 10 feet.

Schonstedt magnetometers were used to sweep the entire site throughout the metal scrap and UXO removal activities. After the trenches were excavated, the trench bottoms were surveyed with Schonstedt locators again to ensure that no metal debris remained buried.
